The genus, which has more than 300 species in tropical America, mainly includes epyphytic (tree-dwelling) orchids. The very prettily colored flowers are solitary or arranged in small numbers in a small spike. The outer bracts are the most conspicuous parts of the flower. They are fused at the base and often extended to long points at the upper end.
