The more than 300 species are distributed from Mexico to South America and grow mainly in mountainous areas, but sometimes also in the lowlands. The large corms have two leaves at the top end, and the stalk that emerges at the side carries one to many large flowers. Crossbreeding has resulted in hundreds of hybrids within the genus. But hybrids of the genus with Oncidium, Miltonia, Cochlioda, Brassia and others are also available.
