The Venus slipper is widespread in tropical Asia and includes about 65 species, from which numerous garden hybrids have emerged. Some species owe their use as cut flowers to the long durability of their waxy and almost artificial-looking flowers. The species grow on the ground or on rocks and have no sprout tubers. The leathery leaves are green or mottled.
