The 6 species are native to Brazil. These mini orchids only grow to a height of 8 cm and are used to a cool climate. They have slender sprout bulbs, each with a flat, leathery leaf. The flowers are 1 to 8 cm in size and are deep red in colour. In order to obtain red-flowering hybrids, these species are therefore often crossed with Cattleya and related genera.
